Arnis Philippines Represented in Korean Martial Arts Festival

The country’s own martial art of Arnis will be among those represented along with thirty other martial arts at the Tenth World Martial Arts Festival to be held in Chungju, South Korea, from September 28 to October 4. This annual festival gathers martial artists from all over the world to demonstrate and share their skills, including practitioners from more prominent arts such as Karate, Muay Thai, and Taekwondo to more exotic styles such as Sambo, Viet Vo Dao, and Hapkido.

In order to showcase the distinctive skills and techniques that have made Arnis known around the world, Arnis Philippines, Inc. member of the Philippine Olympic Committee and the officially-recognized umbrella organization or National Sports Association, will send a seven-member delegation to this festival, headed by Mr. Richardson C. Gialogo, Vice President for External Affairs. The exhibition team is comprised by Master Jaime Quizana, Mr. Ryan Gialogo, Marie Kristine Crespo, Mikhal de Dios, Raymond de Vera, and Raymund Anthony Suba, all multi-awarded Arnis athletes.

For four (4) straight years now, Arnis Philippines has been sending representatives to this world event and the Philippine delegation has always been a crowd favorite due to the Filipinos’ exceptional martial skills coupled with their amiable personalities and decorum.

Arnis is an indigenous Philippine martial art that is famous for its stick and blade fighting emphasis. Because of its effectiveness and practicality, it is being taught to and used by police and armed forces both inside and outside the country.

“Truly we are nearing our dream of including Sports Arnis as part of the sports program in many countries,” says Arnis Philippines President, Mr. Raymond S. Velayo.

Change in Philippine Olympic Festival NCR Schedule

As announced by the POF Organizing Committee, POF-NCR hosted by Quezon City has been postponed to October 10-14.

POF- Bicol and Southern Tagalog will still push through on October 22-28, hosted by Naga City.

Philippine Olympic Festival - Visayas

The Philippine Olympic Festival Organizing Comittee requires all POF sports to strictly follow the ruling that only NSA members are allowed to compete. Please refer to POFOC ground rules. (www.philolympicfestival.com)

All participants may settle their outstanding dues at the tournament venue in Iloilo.

This is for the information and guidance of all concerned.

Arnis Para Sa Tanod 2007

Last Saturday, March 10, 2007 saw the launching of the Arnis Para sa Tanod Project at the Barangay Mariana Community Center. This three month program, sponsored by the Rotary Club of New Manila, Arnis Philippines Incorporated (ArPI), and Quezon City District 4 Representative Nanette Castelo-Daza, aims to train barangay tanods from 36 barangays in Quezon City on the Filipino fighting art of arnis. So far, 136 tanods from different barangays have signed up for this program, and this number is expected to grow.Barangay and city officials have expressed their concern for the lack of training of barangay tanods in self-defense. Most do not know how to wield and use arnis sticks properly under their mandate as peace keepers, even if they carry these with them every day.

This three-month program will also include training in sport arnis. Vice President Richard Gialogo believes that knowledge in martial arts techniques alone sometimes is not enough in subduing and catching bad elements. The barangay tanods should be fit, quick, and agile enough to use the techniques taught to them. Plus, there is a need for intensive training for the tanods to be more athletically inclined, to serve their communities better.

Also, ArPI, in coordination with the local government, plans of having inter-baranggay tanod tournaments once this project is underway. This way, according to ArPI officials, the tanods will be more interested and have an added incentive to train, and this is also more efficient since the local government of Quezon City already has its own active sport arnis program, and the office of the Vice Mayor is very supportive of it.

ARPI President, Mr. Raymond S. Velayo, plans of adding more phases to this training program, wherein the tanods would be trained for other skills such as crowd control, VIP protection, and to act as an emergency response team for calamities.

Batang QC Olympics 2007

Arnis was included in this year's Batang QC Olympics, held on January 27, 2007 at the Amoranto Sports Complex in Quezon City. Thirty-three (33) barangays fielded boys and girls ages 17 years old and below. The competition lasted the whole day, with the kids competing in the Laban and Anyo events.
